Transport Research and Advocate for High-Speed Rail
What are the factors that influence your choice of transportation? These can include things like money, time, and convenience, as well as perceptions of danger or safety. What would need to change for you to regularly choose more climate-friendly options?

There is no mass transit that runs from my house to work, let alone to my child's daycare and work. A years-long light rail planning effort was sadly just defeated in my region by Duke objecting to its location: http://sallygreene.org/dolrt-what-was-lost/?fbclid=IwAR1wcmYmaPIqNJpXUlYc4XLs21Dv8vkKECZeADE8-iM3MOAiBh_Zn2okyQE. We need a viable infrastructure to get to my regular destinations. On weekends I'm able to take advantage of good biking infrastructure and culture to bike downtown for errands and events.

Since I bought a carbon offset for my upcoming flight, I started calculating my overall footprint. It's interesting but I'm not sure I got everything. I was showing as well below the US average (for myself as an individual, I didn't do my whole household), which would be nice if it's true. It's certainly my hope!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Purchase a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2. What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

I bought carbon offsets for a work trip from NC to CA, ~1700 pounds(!) of carbon. It cost $10 through TerraPass, which uses third-party certification and audits to confirm the projects meet good standards.

Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I work to reduce my person food waste and am working on the challenge of reducing the food waste of a 2-year old...I now save very small portions of leftovers but it's hard when he dumps out half a bowl of food at dinner as part of his sensory learning process.
