Food
Support Local Food Systems
#4 Plant-Rich Diet
I will source 20 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Food
Keep Track of Wasted Food
#3 Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the EcoChallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Land Use
Plant Trees
#15 Afforestation
I will plant 2 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Land Use
Buy Bamboo
#35 Bamboo
When they are available, I will purchase products made from bamboo instead of wood, plastic, or metal.
Buildings and Cities
Go for a Daily Walk
#54 Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 75 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Women and Girls
Connect With A Nonprofit
#6 Educating Girls, #7 Family Planning, #62 Women Smallholders
I will connect with a local nonprofit working on womens' or girls' issues in my community, and find out how I can get involved or become a member.
Food
Smaller Portions
#3 Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Food
Learn More about Silvopasture
#9 Silvopasture
I will spend at least 15 minutes watching videos and/or reading about the environmental benefits of silvopasture.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and CitiesWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
rebecca jew 4/24/2019 3:12 PMThe twice-daily walks have been part of my "normal": routine because I have a very large, and active dog. I take him different routes, cities, parks, locations, etc. to keep his interest. During the challenge, I've been more purposeful when observing my surroundings. I talk to my dog about what we see, hear and smell. LOL - it helps me look around and appreciate beauty in everything. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodFun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?
rebecca jew 4/24/2019 3:09 PMEating smaller portions has made me focus on eating slower (because there is less) so that I can pace myself with the rest of my dinner companions. As a result, I feel like I enjoy / savor my meal more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
rebecca jew 4/24/2019 3:07 PMI think the biggest advantage of silvopasture is the beneficial synergy between both animal and crop farming - a true usage of land in its most natural form. -
rebecca jew 4/06/2019 5:00 PMI've found that the daily challenge items have made me more conscientious about the choices I make. I've become more purposeful with even with small things in throughout my day. Anyone else experiencing any changes?-
Siri Vikan 4/06/2019 7:25 PMAbsolutely agree! I am more conscience of what I am purchasing at the grocery store, planning my walks and more careful of what I put on my plate! This has been such a great experience already for me & my family!
