MaryRose's actions
Materials
Go Paperless
#70 Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Materials
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
#46 Water Saving - Home
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of trees and plants in my yard.
Materials
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
#47 Bioplastic
I will avoid buying toxic plastics, including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl and instead replace them with bioplastic or durable options.
Food
Keep Track of Wasted Food
#3 Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the EcoChallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Food
Support Local Food Systems
#4 Plant-Rich Diet
I will source 100 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Women and Girls
Support Women-Owned Businesses
#62 Women Smallholders
I will spend 15 minutes each day researching women-owned businesses I can support when shopping.
Electricity Generation
Communicate With My Elected Officials
#2 Wind Turbines (Onshore)
I will write or call 5 elected official(s) telling them not to support fossil fuel subsidies and instead support wind energy generation.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
#4 Plant-Rich Diet
I will enjoy 2 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Support Women-Owned BusinessesGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women? Can you share any past experiences that may help others take action?
MaryRose Joseph 4/02/2019 7:31 AMI will continue to work with Women for Women International, an organization that supports women in education, job training and schooling for them and their children. This has helped me help women across the globe to invest in their local communities. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsIn your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?
MaryRose Joseph 3/21/2019 10:43 AMIt's cheap and we have a lot of land to grow these animals. Even though we use CAFO's. There are subsidies for farmers who process meat for big companies like McDonald's and Perdue and Tyson. North Americans have become so removed from how their food is raised and processed. This results in a disconnect from empathy for the farmers who raise the animals and grow the plants to the animals who are slaughtered for their enjoyment.
