REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Pooja Kashyap 4/23/2019 9:03 AMAfter my research, I learned that large structures cause turbulent winds that actually aren't ideal for micro wind turbines. In addition, it is far more efficient to install large diameter, tall wind turbines in open areas with steady, strong winds. Micro wind turbines are mainly used as a sustainability marketing statement. With that said, such a statement could be made on major government buildings or civic projects. However, this money would be better spent on solar panels. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Express My SupportWhat do you like most about biking in your city? What would you like to improve?
Pooja Kashyap 4/22/2019 1:52 PMPortland has great biking streets that allow cyclists to get from place to place quickly. However, we could do a better job separating bikes from cars to reduce the number of bike accidents. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Tour a Green RoofWhat did you learn on your green roof tour?
Pooja Kashyap 4/15/2019 9:12 AMI learned that green roofs can turn brown during dry months. In the case of the project we visited, they requested that the roof be watered to stay green all year round. This resulted in excess water dripping off the roof- basically cancelling out the effort to reduce stormwater coming off the building. The roof still helps mitigate the heat island effect and provides employees with access to views of nature. Overall, it sounds like there are always trade offs with a green roof, but they still have a net positive impact on building occupants. -
Pooja Kashyap 4/08/2019 9:14 AMI'm realizing that with all these one-time challenges, I don't really have a reason to check in every day! Just more motivation to post I guess... -
