I have eaten less-meat and have attempted to cut down my portion sizes. Not only do I know that by doing this, but this also could help with my own diet and well-being. I have felt more energized and overall better about the decision to change my own consumption habits.

Each day, I attempt to figure out different things I can notice about my walks each day. I have noticed that the climate is different each day, which is bringing me more aware of climate change and the impact I am making by having walks each day. I noticed that this past week, the mornings have been chilly and one day during the week it was very humid. This makes me wonder about each action that I personally take during the day, and how it may contribute to the changing climate. By exercising, this helped me realize how I could become greener and take care of this Earth that we all live on by little steps such as carpooling and not wasting food.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Katherine Kohrs's avatar

I first began to become aware of what is in my foods and the ingredients in everything that I ate once I began to realize the bigger impact on climate change and the Earth. I began to not eat things with palm oil in it, and instead have switched over to more organic alternatives. With each choice that I make to change my diet over to more organic items, this could help with deforestation.

    Transport Try Carpooling
List some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

I typically tend to drive to the gym almost every day. From where I live, the gym is about ten minutes away, or if attending a different gym it could be 25 minutes away. However, I chose to do this action because I like to drive with another person who also works out with me, and we drive together almost every day. He has a truck so we typically use my own car, which is a compact vehicle. I believe that by us carpooling, this has saved from a ton of toxins being released into the atmosphere. As well, carpooling is something that everyone should at least try to do once a day because this could not only help with the CO2 emissions, but this is a wonderful time to get to know someone and travel to the same place.

Women and Girls Support Women-Owned Businesses
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women? Can you share any past experiences that may help others take action?

Women-owned businesses are the key to a great consumer market. There are a lot of times where people believe that men are the stakeholders that own most businesses, but there are a lot of great businesses that are run by women. By supporting women-owned businesses and learning more about these businesses, we can motivate the next generation of women to stand up and know that they too have a chance at becoming what ever they want.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Buildings and Cities Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

I noticed that it is quieter when I walk because it is usually early in the morning. Sometimes, the walks are humid at six in the morning but other times, it's a bit chilly. On the chilly days, those are my favorite. I enjoy seeing the sunrise, I like seeing the birds begin their day, and just noticing another day becoming alive and having a chance to start over. I realize during these walks that each day on the Earth is precious and we need to take into consideration that we should care for the Earth a lot more by becoming greener.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?

There are a lot of health benefits to eating smaller portions, which is why I try to minimize my portions. The health benefits are astronomical; most people that over eat tend to feel bloated, tired, and sluggish all day. However, when a person eats smaller, healthier portions this helps gain energy as well as helps a person's metabolism.

For my walk today with my dog, it was kind of chilly outside so it was a brisk walk, but it helped me reflect on the ever-changing climate that we are impacted by each day. I never really stopped to consider about climate change or how badly global warming is impacting our planet. I think that with taking this class and just being outside and taking walks each day, it has really helped me grasp how important this movement is and that more people need to be better educated on the issue in order to save the planet.

    Food Reduce Animal Products
In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

    Katherine Kohrs's avatar
    Katherine Kohrs 4/12/2019 9:13 AM
I believe that North America eats more meat than other countries because of the access that we have to meat. However, for myself personally, I don't really even like meat to begin with so the challenge was easy to do. I believe that a lot of people in North America that are regular meat eaters do not tend to think about the impact of eating meat and what this does to the overall environment. They see food instead of seeing a living animal that has a life. I think that more people should become aware of the impact eating meat has on the overall environment and knowing how bad eating meat actually is, more people would be able to cut back on their meat consumption drastically.

I always walk around in the mornings, in order to refresh my own mind and take on a new day. I think that walking outside is not only refreshing, but can connect you to the outside world. I believe that if more people were able to take walks each day, not only can this help the environment as a whole but it is very refreshing and puts you at one with nature. I usually walk my dog during my outside walks, so she enjoys it very much as well.
