Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

How does using human-powered transportation make you feel compared to using other methods of transportation?

Human powered transportation feels good because I can literally feel the impact of what I'm doing and I know in my head that it helps the world around me

It's going well. Life is getting a lot busier with the semester coming to an end, so it's difficult to keep track of my sustainability practices, but I'm trying to keep my carbon footprint down

So far so good. I've been a lot more conscious about my carbon footprint and making easy adjustments to live sustainably.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

List some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

Work, school, store, pool. I sometimes carpool with my roommates to and from school
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

    Emily Loewinger 4/11/2019 1:07 PM
I can definitely attest to buying more food than I need and then just tossing it when it gets rotten. If I had an extra $1,500 in my pocket I would put that money towards buying organic foods because I can't afford to do that now, but I would much rather eat that way.

I ate a hard boiled egg for breakfast and was able to put the shell in the garbage disposal. I also ate a cup of Yoplait and recycled the yogurt container.

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Emily Loewinger's avatar

It looks pretty similar to Babcock Ranch. There would be solar panels, solar hot water heaters, roof top gardens, and tons of native plants. There would be flora everywhere and hopefully fauna as well.

Electricity Generation Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass techonology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share this with your friends!

"Biomass is a “bridge” solution, phased out over time in favor of cleaner energy sources. This analysis assumes all biomass is derived from perennial bioenergy feedstock—not forests, annuals, or waste — and replaces coal and natural gas in electricity production. By 2050, biomass energy could reduce 7.5 gigatons of carbon dioxide emissions. As clean wind and solar power become more available in a flexible grid, the need for biomass energy will decline," according to Drawdown

What did you learn about wave and tidal energy? Were you surprised by the information you found?

This is a very good method of renewable energy. This type of energy is produced by the ocean. With the ocean constantly flowing, it's a renewable resource. It could provide enough energy to sustain the entire USA, however there are implications regarding how it will impact marine life and the maintenance of the technology used for tidal energy.

I live in an apartment and can't necessarily compost, however for breakfast today I ate a banana and threw the peel in the woods, then for lunch I had a cucumber with hummus (in a big container so I won't have to throw away the plastic until I'm finished with it). So far today I haven't produced any waste.
