REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Try CarpoolingList some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Elijah Lukens 4/24/2019 11:29 AMI carpool to school, sports practice, and back home after practice almost everyday -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Elijah Lukens 4/24/2019 11:28 AMI can stop buying the palm oil and the products of the companies who are draining the disrespecting the peat bogs. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More about BiomassHad you ever heard of biomass techonology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share this with your friends!
Elijah Lukens 4/23/2019 12:20 PMI had heard of biomass in middle school but never researched it. Biomass is renewable and a very effective energy source. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Elijah Lukens 4/22/2019 4:48 PMThe bigger buildings in the city like the BB&T building, the taller apartment buildings which would help with their electricity bills. The Biltmore house could get a few and use less energy from the city power grid. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Local Perennial BiomassClimate scientist Katharine Hayhoe states that "The reason we care about climate change is because it affects the people and places that we care about." What is happening (or will happen) in your area that will affect the people and places you care about?
Elijah Lukens 4/12/2019 11:45 AMThere's a lot of deforestation to clear space for new developments of homes. There is a lot of highway widening too which is taking more forest lands and people's properties. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Elijah Lukens 4/12/2019 11:36 AMI feel scared about what we're doing to our earth with all of the pollution, carbon emissions, and deforestation taking place. I will try my best to reduce my footprint and respect the environment. I feel hopeful about restoration efforts because enough people can make a huge difference. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Share Bioplastic Disposal TipsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Elijah Lukens 4/11/2019 12:15 PMThe biggest thing concerning me is the garbage patches in the oceans. This scares me because it shows how much we've polluted our water and all the inaction we've taken. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Elijah Lukens 4/11/2019 12:13 PMI eat a lot of meat and foods containing palm oil. I will start reading labels and eating a more plant-rich diet and informing other people too because everyone can help. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Elijah Lukens 4/09/2019 11:35 AMI had never heard the term before, I think the biggest advantage to them is the extra income generated by nuts, berries, mushrooms, fruit, etc which all can be found in the trees.
