REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Ava M 4/24/2019 11:39 AMFor different brands, for example, coffee that is labeled “rainforest alliance” meaning no trees were in harm in the making of this coffee. Being more aware of safe brands and safe substitutes for palm oil or any other harmful food ingrident that can be easily prevented to hurt Earth. There are good brands that are Earth-friendly brands for paper. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationHad you ever heard of biomass techonology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share this with your friends!
Ava M 4/23/2019 4:02 PMI learned about biomass technology beforehand. Going into more detailed research left me most surprised about the heating system. It’s an ensured eco-friendly low-cost heating system that provides to multiple places than just one. The article I read expressed how this biomass energy system left the owners positive, technology innovative, and finances steady. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Ava M 4/12/2019 11:33 AMI will put more thought into products that may harm forests. Researching about the seriousness of this issue makes me more aware of deforestation.
That there's an endless amount of forests and trees being cut down in countries where our primates live and people are not focusing on helping their environment.
The giant movement happening across the globe with everyone realizing the issues happening in the earth. People are making huge efforts in helping the globe and spreading awareness. It is is very hopeful. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseHow is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Ava M 4/09/2019 8:01 PMI had not heard of the term “silvopasture” before today. The main advantage I found with watching and researching about silvopasture is that there are health benefits to the animals and the land when using the silvopasture method. Animals gain nutrition and cows maintain milk production without heat stress. Land improves in a healthy way when farmers maintain forestry products. The health benefits lead to the financial benefits that farmers receive such as diversifying income and timber sales. Overall much better for the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Ava M 4/07/2019 10:51 AMI can make a proper assumption about the product I am about to buy or eat now and feel more secure about understanding the language expiration stickers use telling information about the product. Knowing about expiration dates will help the safety and health of the consumer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Ava M 4/07/2019 10:35 AMThe plastics that are harmful are a huge worry not only after reading more into it but learning about them in class shows how important this issue is. I think there is no need to use petro-plastics if we found a solution using bio-plastic that are biodegradable. I think people have found solutions we just need to push them more to use them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
