Learn about Local Indigenous Practices
#39 Indigenous Peoples' Land Management
I will spend at least 80 minutes learning how local indigenous tribes are caring for the land by attending a training, workshop, or presentation.
Electricity Generation
Communicate With My Elected Officials
#2 Wind Turbines (Onshore)
I will write or call 2 elected official(s) telling them not to support fossil fuel subsidies and instead support wind energy generation.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and GirlsWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? Share some of the learning with your friends!
Oliver Milford 4/09/2019 10:51 AMContraceptives are extremely important for every sexually active individual who does not have the means to raise a child. Its necessary to stress the importance because not only would it put the parents in question into stress and lose money, but the child would not be raised healthily if not in the right conditions. -
Oliver Milford 4/05/2019 8:26 AMThis challenge has really shown me how just taking a little time out of my day can help so much in this quest to save the planet. As a competitive person it has really helped me in learning more about my impact and challenging others to educate themselves as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? Were you surprised by the information you found?
Oliver Milford 4/05/2019 8:11 AMI learned about the different types of tidal energy and how not all of it is underwater turbine power. Some energy is created from dams harnessing the potential energy of the tides and some is turbine power. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationHad you ever heard of biomass techonology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share this with your friends!
Oliver Milford 4/05/2019 8:03 AMI knew little about biomass energy before I did this research, and I learned that it used to be a traditional fuel source in the 70s before fossil fuels took over the market. The ashes from biomass energy can be reused as fertilizer for agriculture making this energy even more useful. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Oliver Milford 4/05/2019 7:52 AMI live in the country, so a good place for wind turbines or micro wind turbines would be on mountain tops or fields in area where there are no obstructions from the wind. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Oliver Milford 4/04/2019 7:47 AMA community should have a sustainable green source of energy. Disposable packaging should be reduced and replaced with compostable or recyclable materials. People should use electric cars and be conscious of their carbon footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
Oliver Milford 4/04/2019 7:26 AMBecause geothermal energy is most easily sourced from volcanically or tectonically active areas, it would be best to fund geothermal plants in those areas because they will be more efficient and have better energy results. If greener energy plants receive better funding they will have the means to be a source for a wider range of people. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationIdentify some ways in which modern human societies have become unsustainable. What kind of roles do individuals have in creating and changing practices in society?
Oliver Milford 4/04/2019 7:15 AMTheres only a limited supply of fossil fuels and oil, when solar energy or wind power is a regular source that we wont run out of. Although it may not always be sunny or windy, we can reduce the amount of energy we use and store that solar energy for when we need it. Geothermal energy is another option, a sustainable source of energy from the heat of the earth. Switching from fossil fuels to greener energy is a great way to create a cleaner, healthier earth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?
Oliver Milford 4/01/2019 7:51 AMAt the end of the school year I'd like to take my old notebooks that I had used throughout the year and fix them up into new journals or notebooks for my writing or for the next school year. I still have notebooks from 5th grade and this would be a good use for them. I had done this in the past and I want to continue it.
When I have clothes I hadn't worn in a while I donate them to thrift stores for reuse. I haven't gone through my closet in a while, so I plan to do this again very soon. If the clothes are too worn to be wearable I'd like to sew them into things that are more useful. I want to spend more of my time thinking about how I can reuse and re-purpose my old belongings so they don't go to waste. -
Oliver Milford 4/01/2019 7:26 AMI'm Oliver and I live in upstate NY. I wish to contribute to the prevention of climate change in any way I might be able, and I can't wait to start using this website to begin.-
