-
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and CitiesWhat are some of the benefits of making your home more energy efficient?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
Rosemary Maloney 4/24/2019 4:35 PMI was surprised / interested to learn that "crop and livestock production is the source of about 1/8 of anthropogenic emissions. Land clearing (which is mostly for agriculture) is the source of another 1/8 of emissions." That's a lot of emissions! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationWhat is the most exciting solution you explored? Why is it exciting to you?
Rosemary Maloney 4/24/2019 4:31 PMThe most exciting solution for me may be small scale hydropower, mostly because it was the one I researched for APES class, but also because it can be used in so many places (developing and developed countries, anywhere there is enough flow) and it does not have to have a large environmental impact like large scale hydropower. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Rosemary Maloney 4/24/2019 2:03 PMI am most concerned that we are approaching and passing climate tipping points, which causes damage that will be long lasting and difficult to undo later. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsConcrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but may its carbon footprint is not obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?
Rosemary Maloney 4/24/2019 1:53 PMI guess a lot of things do. Anything that needed transportation has a pretty large footprint, so anything you buy online and get shipped. You could find out more by researching and/or doing educational challenges here. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and CitiesWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
Rosemary Maloney 4/24/2019 1:50 PMI thought it was interesting that "the same barriers necessary to keep pedestrians safe can also encourage foot traffic." I also didn't know that walkable cities usually have a city center. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
Rosemary Maloney 4/23/2019 1:53 PMTransportation that is better for the environment can also a lot of times be better for people economically. There is a gap between people who cannot afford fossil fuel powered cars and those who can and are able to use them to get to work. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Rosemary Maloney 4/22/2019 4:24 PMHaving more sustainable technology like methane digesters would certainly help create a sustainable community! We could change our reliance on nonrenewable fossil fuels. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Rosemary Maloney 4/21/2019 3:31 PMMaybe on top of tall buildings like apartments or hotels, but our community may not be windy enough for it to be very profitable (solar may be better). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodClean air, clean water and healthy food are three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons?
Rosemary Maloney 4/21/2019 3:21 PM1. Capture carbon in soil.
2. Increase biodiversity.
3. Regenerate / save soil for the future.
