Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Stay on the Ground
What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

    Mia Mastropietro's avatar
    Mia Mastropietro 4/23/2019 3:23 PM
My process for restructuring my trip was very simple; carpooling rather than flying. I can avoid more air travel in the future by choosing not to participate in unnecessarily luxurious far-away vactaions.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transport Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

    Mia Mastropietro's avatar
    Mia Mastropietro 4/23/2019 3:21 PM
Other motivators that inspired me to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle were the cost of running and maintaining the car, and the increased safety of the car.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Fix Leaky Faucets
What are other easy and low-cost ways to reduce your water usage at home?

    Mia Mastropietro's avatar
    Mia Mastropietro 4/23/2019 3:17 PM
Other easy and low-cost ways to reduce your water usage at home are collecting rainwater as an alternative for some situations, reducing the duration of showers, and reducing the number of loads of laundry that are washed by waiting until you have a full load.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Materials Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

    Mia Mastropietro's avatar
    Mia Mastropietro 4/23/2019 3:14 PM
Some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems are pollution and deforestation. I can improve the health of water systems by researching things my family can start doing in our own home and then apply those things to water systems in other areas of my life.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Go Paperless
What do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?

    Mia Mastropietro's avatar
    Mia Mastropietro 4/23/2019 3:09 PM
I want to prioritize experiences over material "stuff" in my life.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Choose Recycled Paper
Good job on choosing recycled paper! How can you take your action a step further?

    Mia Mastropietro's avatar
    Mia Mastropietro 4/23/2019 3:08 PM
I can take my action of choosing recycled paper a step further by encouraging my family to do the same.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Eliminate Toxic Plastics
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Mia Mastropietro's avatar
    Mia Mastropietro 4/23/2019 3:08 PM
Single-use items I regularly use are plastic coffee cups and straws. I could and recently have substituted them for a reusable coffee cup and a set of reusable straws.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Plant Trees
How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    Mia Mastropietro's avatar
    Mia Mastropietro 4/23/2019 3:05 PM
Planting trees is good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health because it can help you clear your mind, it is a form of physical exercise and you may feel more connected to the earth afterward.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Contact your Elected Officials
Do you have any personal connections to a farm or farmland? If so, what are they? What feelings are evoked for you when thinking about declining farmland?

    Mia Mastropietro's avatar
    Mia Mastropietro 4/23/2019 3:03 PM
I don't have a personal connection to a farm or farmland. However, feelings of sorrow, anger, hope, and many more are evoked when I think about declining farmland.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

    Mia Mastropietro's avatar
    Mia Mastropietro 4/23/2019 3:00 PM
Personally, I would rather use the $1,500 that the average family of four spends in a year on food that they throw out to for pay for a small portion of my college education. In regards to how I would use the money in an environmental aspect though, I would like to see it be put towards increasing safety in rural and urban areas, for example, the restoration of uneven sidewalks.
