Jennifer May

Woodstock Day School

"As a food photographer, my passion is food. I am focusing on ways I can reduce food waste, grow more of my own food, and I am becoming increasingly aware of my outdated reliance on single-use plastics. (I am changing the latter by refilling plastic product bottles & avoiding purchasing plastic in the first place.) Together we can make a tremendous impact."

    Land Use Forest-Friendly Foods 2
How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

This is more of a future commitment. My 7-year-old daughter says: "We will not buy coffee beans and chocolate that are from the rain forest."

We are lucky because there are lots of alternatives for sale in shops around here.

I agree with your daughter! I don’t use many things that come from any natural place.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Jennifer May's avatar
    Jennifer May 4/24/2019 4:09 PM
My7-year-old daughter learned something at school. She says: "Don't buy palm oil, because it is bad for the rainforests, and if it's all gone, there will be no place for the animals to live, and they will be hungry and could die. That is why we don't want to buy palm oil."

      Harrison Bardel 4/24/2019 4:41 PM
I don’t buy palm oil at all! It’s bad for the earth and it makes me feel sick. Probably because of the oily part.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Fix Leaky Faucets
What are other easy and low-cost ways to reduce your water usage at home?

    Jennifer May's avatar
    Jennifer May 4/24/2019 4:03 PM
My 7-year-old daughter suggests this: "When you are going to the bathroom, if you are going pee, leave it for the other person, if they are going pee, too."

I was always taught to turn the water off when I brush my teeth.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Buildings and Cities Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    Jennifer May's avatar
    Jennifer May 4/24/2019 1:56 PM
I enjoy chatting with my friend on my walks. Walking with her are some of the highlights of my week. Wider shoulders on our road would be amazing. If we had those, then I would bike to town for errands.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
Every dollar you put into solar or wind is a dollar not put into traditional financial institutions. You'll also be bolstering the fossil fuel divestment movement, too. Name some companies you know that invest in green energy. How can you support them?

I was not surprised to see that Google is listed as one of the top 5 companies in America in this category. I have worked for different areas of the Google food world, and they are very progressive.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass techonology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share this with your friends!

    Jennifer May's avatar
    Jennifer May 4/24/2019 1:47 PM
I had never heard of biomass technology before reading about it here. Honestly, I still don't quite get how it works, but I see that it is "a “bridge” solution—one that can help the world transition from fossil-fuel power to 100 percent clean, renewable energy. " So, that is interesting.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Jennifer May's avatar
    Jennifer May 4/24/2019 1:38 PM
It seems to me that Anaerobic Digesters could solve a lot of the problems we have with the waste from feedlots. Is that right? It seems a way to not create such waste, and to create energy from what would be waste.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Go Paperless
What do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?

    Jennifer May's avatar
    Jennifer May 4/22/2019 7:39 PM
I want to prioritize space (in my home) over stuff.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Are bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?

    Jennifer May's avatar
    Jennifer May 4/22/2019 7:38 PM
Bamboo toothbrush. I am trying it. So sick of single-use plastic. It is everywhere I look - more than ever.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Jennifer May's avatar
    Jennifer May 4/22/2019 7:28 PM
We have been more conscious of the old California saying, "if it's yellow, let it mellow."
