Improve a Bus Stop

Keep Track of Wasted Food
#3 Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the EcoChallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

#38 Forest Protection
I will only purchase wood and paper products from ecologically certified sources like Forest Stewardship Council.

Cory McAllister 4/13/2019 1:57 PMWell, today was the first time I rode in a car for the past two weeks!-
Cory McAllister 4/15/2019 8:51 AMHa!
Dad couldn't drive for medical reasons, and Mom was doing an online retreat, so I didn't have much choice. -
Kasia Stepien 4/15/2019 8:22 AMWow, nice work Cory!!!
-
-
Cory McAllister 4/08/2019 3:13 PMWow, am I really leading the team in points? Thanks for the acknowledgement!-
Dan Leahy 4/13/2019 7:18 PMI agree with Kasia. We should give you a big shout out :-) -
Kasia Stepien 4/08/2019 9:55 PMWell done Cory! You got a shout out at Sunday's service too :D

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Cory McAllister 4/05/2019 12:18 PMA sustainable community would be one where we use too technology, grow our own food, and could function without the "outside world". -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Cory McAllister 4/03/2019 3:08 PMI do enjoy riding my bike places. This may partly be because I can't drive, and can't really use the transit system. (see my last post). I don't really enjoy walking places, though.-
Kasia Stepien 4/07/2019 7:40 AMI love riding my bike too! It's way more fun than being stuck in a car.
It's harder though now that I live in the boonies. I chose this same challenge for myself, and so far I have reduced my car trips (just by combining multiple trips into one). But I still haven't gotten out on my bike since this challenge began. I should force myself to bike to tonight's Unitarian service! -
Dan Vie 4/03/2019 8:38 PMI love bikes too.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Improve a Bus StopHow can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?
Cory McAllister 4/03/2019 3:05 PMI'm not sure how exactly I can advocate the bus system here in Courtenay. The bus goes through the stop by our house twice per day. If the bus system was improved, however, then it would actually meet human needs.-
Cory McAllister 4/08/2019 3:15 PMWell, I just took the bus home from swim lessons up at the Aquatic Centre. We took the bus as far as the Driftwood Mall, and needed to either walk the rest of the way or wait 2 hours for the next bus. :( -
Dan Vie 4/03/2019 8:41 PMP.S. Celia wrote that. Pretty good, eh? Sounded just like me. -
Dan Vie 4/03/2019 8:40 PMI know man. But if we ride more, they may fund more. I can get you the councillors emails, or you can use this link. https://www.courtenay.ca/EN/main/city-hall/mayor-council/contact-mayor-council.html
I think if you tell them you are 13 they will pay attention more. Good luck!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Keep Track of Wasted FoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Choose Better Wood ProductsBeyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?
-
Cory McAllister 3/28/2019 9:20 AMYes, it should be part of the way we live, but a lot of people need things like this to get started.-
Cory McAllister 4/03/2019 2:39 PMWell, you have to start with your personal life! If you go out to McDonalds every day but tell everyone you meet to eat less beef, hen you aren't really doing much! -
Kasia Stepien 4/03/2019 11:38 AMI agree Cory. I have made quite a few changes in my lifestyle over the last few years to reduce my footprint (decreasing consumption, transitioning to a plant-based diet). But I haven't done much beyond my personal life. I'm using this challenge to get started on community and political level action!

Cory McAllister 3/27/2019 11:34 AMI think projects like this should have started a long time ago.-
Dan Leahy 3/28/2019 8:33 AMMaybe it shouldn't even be a project. Maybe this should just be a part of our ongoing culture, a part of the way we live.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Cory McAllister 3/27/2019 11:20 AMI have not heard of silvopasture before now. I think that the biggest benefit of it is to increase farmland productivity.
