Women and Girls Give a Microloan
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. Why do you think that is?

I think that women are trained and programmed (through society) to be more nurturing than men, meaning that women typically place a higher value on family and community than on themselves. Therefore, supporting women and their access to equal pay, opportunity, and education, is beneficial to society and all members of their communities.

How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

My diet does not make up the largest part of my impact because we do not eat a ton of processed foods. However, the products I use on a regular basis like my soaps, hair care, and makeup do impact deforestation because most of them have some type of palm oil. I will look for products that have no palm oil or are made by companies that use certified sustainable palm oil or have an anti-deforestation policy. Though these products might be more expensive, they are probably better for me in the long run and most certainly better for the planet.

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

My vision of a sustainable community is one that is a balance between more traditional resource management (similar to the great depression when saving money and reducing waste was imperative to survival), mixed with the efficiency and benefits of modern technology. If our society could move away from our post-modern consumption driven mindset, it would be much easier to implement technologies like methane digesters.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?

Eating smaller portions is effective for weightloss and prevention of overeating. It can also help train the body to reduce appetite and suppress feelings of hunger.

What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

My neighborhood is fairly wealthy, meaning that I enjoy wide streets with sidewalks, crosswalks, and bike lanes. All of these things make it quite easy to walk in my neighborhood, but I recognize that because my neighborhood is located in one of the wealthier areas of my town, not everyone who lives in Asheville will have the same experience. I also feel that living in the mountains can be deterrent to people's willingness and ability to walk. Walking up and down hills is great exercise, but it's not feasible or enjoyable for everyone. However, there is nothing we can do to change our landscape, so I give props to my city for making a good portion of the city (including downtown where tourists like to explore) fairly accessible for walking.

    Food Reduce Animal Products
In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

American culture is heavily based on the idea that bigger is better. In some ways, I think our tendency to eat copiously is tied to the idea of American exceptionalism and manifest destiny. In the struggles of our past, we learned to strive for power, happiness, and satisfaction, which we express through our diets. The ability to choose our food and eat as much of it as we want is a product of our wealth and privilege as a first world country.
