I Have been trying to compost and food waste goes into the compost bin but I am new at this and so I am afraid to attract vermin to it. I will check out more books from the library.

Keep your compost covered with burlap or something similar (not plastic).  Try to balance out the food waste with dried leaves or paper / cardboard.  Also try to keep it moist, but not too wet.  Too wet and it will smell, too dry and it won't break down.  Play with the balances.  Have fun with it.  Good luck.
