REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Charles Monroe 4/24/2019 6:44 AMGiven that Asheville is a city with many tall buildings, there are multiple places microturbines could be placed. Here is a list: the Wells Fargo building, Asheville Middle, Asheville High, Hotel Indigo, Aloft, Merrill Lynch, and that one building near pack square that has been in construction forever. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Charles Monroe 4/24/2019 6:39 AMChoices I could make to save peatland is to research what companies are choosing peatlands as paper and palm oil plantations and choose to buy from companies that responsibly make their products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationHad you ever heard of biomass techonology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share this with your friends!
Charles Monroe 4/24/2019 6:08 AMI have learned about Biomass technology, although I mainly focused on microwind which I had not known about prior to this challenge. I was surprised to learn that microwind is used all over the country, especially in countries where individual carbon emissions are higher -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Charles Monroe 4/23/2019 12:00 PMAs a musician and a teenager who likes stuff, there is a lot of stuff I would rather use $1,500 on. Here is a comprehensive list of stuff I could use that money for.- A new bass
- A new amp
- New flatwound bass strings
- New tuba mouthpiece
- A lifetime supply of junk food (that I assure you, would not be wasted)
- Tuba practice mute
- A new energy star rated TV for my room
- Video games
- New Switch Controllers
- Donate it to people in need
- And much, much more

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Charles Monroe 4/23/2019 11:52 AMDepending on how you choose to transport, it affects your engagement with your community. When I carpool, I am actively engaging with my community to get somewhere, and without even thinking about it, helping the environment. When I walk somewhere I am saying hi to people in my community on my way to the destination. For example, when I walked to Walgreens I just so happened to meet David, who was also walking to Walgreens. Overall my experience when walking is usually better than driving, that's mostly because I enjoy the outside and it helps relieve my stress. When carpooling my enjoyment is based on who is in the car, this also goes for walking with groups of friends. My least favorite transit is the bus, I just generally don't enjoy the experience of riding with strangers or other loud students on a bus. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?
Charles Monroe 4/23/2019 11:39 AMThere are many ways I could implement other "R's" in my life. As an electric bass player figuring out what to do with old bass strings is has always posed a challenge since guitar strings are not recyclable in most cities. However, keeping old sets of strings in my gig bag for back up in case one break's could save me money from having to buy a backup set. Most bass players don't like doing this since they like the tone of fresh strings, but I personally prefer my tone on the darker side so using old strings poses no problem. Considering other "Rs" makes me feel a lot better about my footprint on the environment and also brings out some creativity in the process.
