  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

We have been refusing already. Repurposing too with ecobricks. Reducing and reusing are obvious. I think that the repairing is one I should do more of. I like learning and changing our behaviour. I feel more like a Mongolian nomad when I do it right!

I am going to watch this with my family soon. https://www.ted.com/talks/katharine_wilkinson_how_empowering_women_and_girls_can_help_stop_global_warming

My friend Frances takes condoms to Mayanmar and demonstrates how to use them using a cucumber! One time she returned to find that they had misunderstood and covered cucumbers with them rather than use them in the way they are meant to be used!

Women and Girls Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Sam Moreton's avatar
    Sam Moreton 4/22/2019 1:54 PM
In the UK women have pretty much equal opportunities. In Mongolia sometimes the women have more power than the men (as they are sobre and strong) but still the old system means that there aren't many females in politics in Mongolia.

    Materials Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but may its carbon footprint is not obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

Furniture. Charcoal for the barbecue. Mobile phones (my mum now has a https://www.fairphone.com/en/.

The internet helps me to understand and ask questions when making purchases/decisions.

My mum found this when trying to explain fly ash to me -https://www.thebalancesmb.com/fly-ash-applications-844761

    Land Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

I know about palm oil as I have flown over Malaysia and seen the vast areas of forest cleared for this monocrop. I now know that I need to read labels more carefully as palm oil operates under pseudonyms like “palmate” or can be used as a derivative for other compounds like sodium lauryl sulphate. I will check what we buy carefully so we don't support this practise.

Food Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
Clean air, clean water and healthy food are three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons?

    I really liked this video.

    https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/why-farmers-are-ditching-industrial-methods-for-this-practice_n_5b9001a9e4b0162f4729378a

    Regenerative agriculture captures carbon.

It has so many advantages over monocropping which is bad for people and the planet.

I was impressed to read this positive news - https://www.cgdev.org/blog/7-hopeful-climate-stories-around-globe?utm_source=Solutions+Story+Tracker

India’s Finance for Forests. India made a big climate move in February when it announced that $6 billion a year in tax revenue will be distributed to states in a way that will encourage forest conservation and restoration. That’s more results-based finance for forest conservation than any other country in the world, including the current biggest spender, Norway. And it works out to a sizeable incentive: Indian states now stand to gain $120 per year for every hectare of forest they replant, and lose $120 per year for every hectare they cut.  India’s regrowing forests currently remove about 200 million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year; look for that number to increase under the new fiscal arrangement.

    Sam Moreton 4/22/2019 12:14 PM
I think that using public transport can be one extreme or the other ie. I have had friendly and scary encounters. Cycling in my village is a nice way to see people in the village and to see what is happening around us.

I have always had a car parked outside my house, and I have taken it for granted until now. I shall try and walk/cycle more. I will also take the school bus when my parents don't need to do the drive for other reasons.

Very often many families drive to our football and rugby away matches. I am going to try to get a whatsapp group started for my teams so that people can offer up or ask for lifts.
