REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Andrea Page 4/03/2019 1:23 PMI had never heard of "silvopasturing" before but it makes so much sense! In the rural area where I live, this is very possible to accomplish (if we ever decide to get some goats or a cow for our property). I didn't realize this was even a thing and now I am extremely interested! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Andrea Page 4/03/2019 5:35 AMUnfortunately, I live in a very rural area where the car is essentially our family's only means of transportation. However, we do consolidate errands and offer to pick up things for our neighbors (like when going to Costco or the grocery store) whenever possible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Launch a Recycling ProgramHow can you take your commitment to sustainable living beyond yourself? How can you, personally, work toward broader change?
Andrea Page 4/03/2019 5:33 AMI work at a high school and we use A LOT of paper, markers, and batteries. We already have a marker and battery recycling program, and I recycle the paper in my classroom, but we do not have a school-wide paper recycling system. Though the school year is drawing to a close, I'd like to establish a paper and plastic bottle program now so that it will be effectively functional when the new school year starts in September. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsIn your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?
Andrea Page 4/03/2019 5:31 AMHere in the Midwest there is definitely a mindset that a proper meal is a hearty "meat and potatoes" type meal. We also view plant-based meals as something that "women do to lose weight." Our society's views on fruits and vegetables indicates that we need to do more to educate ourselves on the advantages of a "less meat" diet and that it's ok to embrace it! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smaller PortionsFun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?
Andrea Page 4/03/2019 5:28 AMEating smaller portions enable a person to realistically gauge when she is hungry or not. Eating less helps with weight loss and also reduces food consumption overall, which benefits the body and the environment.
