I walked a LOT this weekend; especially around my neighborhood... and it was great! It also allowed me to come up with some additional improvement ideas for our local neighborhood organization to tackle.
I started a bit late to the party but have most consistent on using public transport, walking to stores, and getting in a good 30-60 minute walk every day. All in all, not too bad.
How has your access to various kinds of transporation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
I love, love, love to drive but I've realized that I often take that driving privilege for granted. In today's economy and climate, I need to be more cognizant and selective about when and where I drive. I live so close to work and all of my basic needs so I should be using muscle power more for those basic needs and use my car only for longer, necessary trips. So, I'm now stopping myself before I jump in the car and make a more consistent and concerted effort to walk or bike.
I love the look of Cap Hill's flagstone sidewalks but the city should just provide a discount to homeowners for repairing the higher-end flagstone that gives so much character to the area. It would be a shame to remove such character from the neighborhood but they need occasional repair and re-leveling to make them accessible for everyone.
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
I decided to skip taking the bus and just walk home today. No fuel needed for the trip and it was an incredibly relaxing walk through the neighborhood. It even allowed me the opportunity to conveniently stop and pick up food for dinner.
