REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Research Cement AlternativesConcrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but may its carbon footprint is not obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?
Madison Piazza 3/31/2019 12:55 PMFood, though we may not think that much about it, is something that leaves a large carbon footprint. The amount of CO2 that lamb emits is equivalent to that of the CO2 emitted by driving 91 miles. There is a website called carbonfootprint.com where you can calculate how big your own carbon footprint is, or even the footprint of the business you work for. It also gives you suggestions on how to offset the amount of carbon we are releasing into the atmosphere. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More about Wave and Tidal EnergyWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? Were you surprised by the information you found?
Madison Piazza 3/31/2019 11:59 AMI was surprised to find that maintaining systems that utilize wave and tidal energy was more expensive than producing electricity on solid ground. You would think that because the earth is mostly covered in oceans that we would be able to use this kind of energy more than anything else but things are still in the early stages of development. Solar and wind are much further along than wave and tidal energies considering it isn't just based on the movement of waves but in time I'm sure that we will see developments in the technologies. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More About Geothermal EnergyGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
Madison Piazza 3/31/2019 11:47 AMThe key to investing in geothermal energy is to find a geothermal company that has two things; access to land with a high geothermal potential, such as companies located in Nevada, and contracts or pending agreements with major utilities. Even though there are only a handful of companies with these items at the moment, they aren't hard to find and there are plenty of renewable energy stocks that you can invest in. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smaller PortionsFun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?
Madison Piazza 3/31/2019 11:29 AMPortion control can help you feel more satisfied by eating less than you usually do. Eating smaller meals at regular intervals can also help boost people's energy and productivity. Consuming foods such as lentils, tomatoes, green peas and broccoli in smaller quantities can also aid in the slowing of mass produced foods and the emission of greenhouse gases.
