  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Purchase a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2. What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

    Debra Pineiro-Zucker's avatar
    Debra Pineiro-Zucker 4/24/2019 8:58 PM
This question generally would not apply to me or my family. The past year has been unusual, flying back and fourt across the country. We generally will fly if it is an emergency only.

In the future, when we fly we will buy carbon offsets.

If you a looking to purchase carbon offsets Google .......Cool Effect it is a crowdfunding platform that provides individuals the opportunity to support carbon emissions reductions by funding carbon-reducing projects around the world. Cool Effect is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization headquartered in Kentfield, California.[2]

I've done a lot flying this past year, which means tons and tons of co2 was released into the atmosphere. The eco-challenge encouraged and made real the importance of buying a carbon offset.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transport Test Drive an Electric Bike
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Private vehicles account for 60% of trips of a mile or less. Do you often drive short distances instead of biking or walking? If so, how might incorporating an electric bike into your lifestyle help you make more climate-friendly choices?

    Debra Pineiro-Zucker's avatar
    Debra Pineiro-Zucker 4/24/2019 1:50 PM
I loved riding the electric bike! It would certainly make sense for me to get one since I am about a mile away from the school. One problem, the bike I rode costs about $5000!!! Economically not possible. I'll continue to research them. Unfortunately economic inequality will continue to restrict the choices many people would like to make. The positive is that there are some choices that everyone can make.... recycle, don't use plastic bags, shorten your showers, etc.

The challenge has continued to help me ask the question how can I further reduce my carbon footprint and make changes. It's also encouraging to read the results of this challenge as far as co2 reduction, water saving, plastic recycling etc.
We need to spread and take on this challenge everyday!

Doing something every day to reduce my carbon footprint and hopefully encourage others helps me feel and be hopeful.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
Clean air, clean water and healthy food are three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons?

    Debra Pineiro-Zucker's avatar
    Debra Pineiro-Zucker 4/14/2019 8:12 PM
Regenerative agriculture will not only give us clean air, water and healthy food, it will bring back the living organisms in the soil, bring back native vegetation, and the wild life to a specific area, as well as sequester carbon.

Today I received from Central Hudson their Energy Insights report. The report compares 100 homes in your area that have similar characteristics such as heating and housing type. We scored 9 with 10 being the best. I'm pretty happy about!  Now we need to caulk some cracks and weatherstrip a bit.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Debra Pineiro-Zucker's avatar
    Debra Pineiro-Zucker 4/09/2019 8:52 PM
I'd never heard of silvopasture before the challenge. One of the biggest advantages of silvopasture is that when the  pastures are planted with trees, the trees sequester five to ten times as much carbon as those of the same size that are treeless, storing it in both biomass and soil.
