REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Tiffany Porter 4/23/2019 7:30 AMSolar panels, electric cars, compost and recycling pickup, bikes on every street, multiple parks within walking distance. Less noise from cars. I think to attain this, the people in charge of our city need to do more, way more than they’ve planned for. Alexandria has a lot of problems building multi residential homes in former commercial areas and they love to account for cars over bikes and schools. The city needs to get their butts in gear. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Support Nutrient ManagementHow does environmental quality influence your sense of community?
Tiffany Porter 4/23/2019 7:27 AMIt just makes everything more pleasant. Running, biking, shopping at farmers markets. When it’s a beautiful day, my family wants to be outside, my neighbors want to be outside. It’s something we all have in common, enjoying a beautiful day -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Research Cement AlternativesConcrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but may its carbon footprint is not obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?
Tiffany Porter 4/23/2019 7:25 AMI’ve always thought plastic was the worst for carbon. Producing it, consuming it, and not being able to recycle it. This challenge has definitely taught me more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Fix Leaky FaucetsWhat are other easy and low-cost ways to reduce your water usage at home?
Tiffany Porter 4/23/2019 7:24 AMI can start by taking less baths, and when I have the finances buy a water efficiency washer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Support Women-Owned BusinessesGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women? Can you share any past experiences that may help others take action?
Tiffany Porter 4/23/2019 7:23 AMI think that for me, I’ll probably start volunteering my time with girls in youth programs and really change the way I communicate with them. I’ve been a misogynist most of my life, so I think I’ll start with fixing myself, and support women whenever and however I can. But mostly through volunteering. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Make School More AffordableWhy is it important that girls have equal access to education in order to reduce our global greenhouse gas emissions?
Tiffany Porter 4/22/2019 7:05 AMAside from it being the right thing to do, it enables them to practice family planning, it benefits the economy, and it can produce higher food yields. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Explore Other Electricity Generation SolutionsWhat is the most exciting solution you explored? Why is it exciting to you?
Tiffany Porter 4/22/2019 7:01 AMI think the waste to energy is probably the most interesting, and I can’t believe we didn’t use it before. I think it’s just wild how we can take waste and turn it into energy. Why wouldn’t we do that? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Online Energy AuditWhat are your next steps for saving energy?
Tiffany Porter 4/22/2019 6:39 AMInsulation and windows. I’m going to go to the city’s solar audit to see if it’s possible for us. But insulation followed by windows may be all we can afford. I’m surprised we’ve done a lot to retro fit our house. But, as always, we can do more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Social Justice Express My SupportHow could better walking infrastructure make your city both more enjoyable and more equitable?
Tiffany Porter 4/22/2019 6:37 AMI think it would raise my property value for sure. I think it would bring a feeling of adorable little neighborhood quality to it, as well as a place where people would want to raise their kids. What’s funny is living next to a brewery has improved our real estate, but every time I run or bike on the path next to it, I think it draws more people to the neighborhood. I can only imagine the possibilities if our Main Street went down to 2 lanes with bike lanes in place of the other 2 lanes. I think it would look cleaner, less shabby, and more with the times -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Social Justice Support Microgeneration in Low Income CountriesHow can micro energy solutions reduce inequities? Why is this important to you?
Tiffany Porter 4/12/2019 3:49 PMIt enables impoverished countries to leapfrog what would in essence be detrimental to the environment. While also not missing a beat. I think it’s important not only because these countries don’t contribute as much carbon as wealthy countries, but they suffer more from the effects of climate change than urban countries. We have to a duty to not leave them behind and suffer because of our years of mistakes.
