    Transport Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

My transportation choices do not affect my engagements in my community. In a car, you are driving by everything so fast that you can't stop and enjoy the Earth. When I walk to different places, I am able to appreciate nature more.

    Materials Go Paperless
What do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?

    Abigail Pumm's avatar
    Abigail Pumm 4/15/2019 9:17 AM
I want to prioritize helping the environment over material 'stuff' in my life. When myself and others begin to prioritize the Earth, material items that produce a lot of un-recyclable waste will be bought less. From this, this company may choose to use materials that are recyclable so that consumers begin to buy their products again.

Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Abigail Pumm's avatar

Use by is aimed at consumers to tell them a general time to eat the food. After the use by date, the product's quality will decline. Sell by is aimed at retailers to tell them what products to put towards the front of the shelf to sell quicker. Best by tells you the best date to eat the product. I will look more closely at the dates on the packages and buy foods close to their use by, sell by, and best by dates so that they do not get added to food waste.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?

Using smaller potions will reduce the amount of food wasted. Less food waste would be beneficial in many aspects. When food isn't wasted, then land, water, energy, and hours of labor are also not wasted. Also, when food is dumped into landfills, it can release harmful gases, such as methane, that can damage the environment.

    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

    Abigail Pumm's avatar
    Abigail Pumm 4/01/2019 5:58 PM
I could make more of an effort to research what materials can be recycled or reused in my daily life. Implementing these R's makes me feel like I am doing a small part in fixing the major trash issue on Earth.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

    Abigail Pumm's avatar

I think that fast food contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other country. This shows that Americans value a fast way of life, where they can grab food on the go. When they eat fast food, they don't have to think about where the food came from, what went into making the food, and how the animals used for the meat were treated before being slaughtered.
