Andrew's actions
Electricity Generation
Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
#29 Wave and Tidal
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of wave and tidal energy.
Materials
Recycle Everything I Can
#55 Household Recycling
I will recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community.
Electricity Generation
Learn More about Biomass
#34 Biomass
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
#4 Plant-Rich Diet
I will enjoy 1 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Food
Support Local Food Systems
#4 Plant-Rich Diet
I will source 5 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Electricity Generation
Learn More About Geothermal Energy
#18 Geothermal
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of geothermal energy and consider investing in this technology.
Transport
Try Carpooling
#75 Ridesharing
I will commute by carpool 6 mile(s) per day and avoid sending up to 2.42 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Materials
Fix Leaky Faucets
#46 Water Saving - Home
I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water per faucet every day.
Transport
Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
#26 Electric Vehicles
I will spend at least 15 minutes researching and weighing my options to see if a hybrid or electric vehicle makes sense for my lifestyle.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsIn your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?
Andrew Rabin 4/05/2019 12:22 PMNorth Americans eat so much meat because we are bombarded with advertisements and media that try to sell us big juicy hamburgers and bacon on everything. We as a culture have become separated from the process of food production. People know less about where their food comes from. This disconnect leads to a diet with less unprocessed and plant foods than ever. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Recycle Everything I CanHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?
Andrew Rabin 4/05/2019 11:44 AMI would like to specifically consume less plastic packaging. When I think about all of the products from the grocery store that we buy regularly that contain some amount of plastic packaging I get a little overwhelmed. It is especially difficult shopping for children who are picky eaters. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More about Wave and Tidal EnergyWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? Were you surprised by the information you found?
Andrew Rabin 4/05/2019 11:40 AMI learned that there are different types of tidal power installations. At the more environmental impactful end there are barriers created at an ocean inlet. This generates 200-300 MW of power however it can negatively impact the ecosystem of the inlet. There are also stand alone units more like wind turbines that sit on the ocean floor or ocean fences made up of many turbines. Ocean fences are not put into practice yet. Tidal power harnesses the gravitational power of the moon and sun that moves the ocean tides. That mechanical energy can be transformed into electrical energy for our use.
