REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Alana Randol 4/23/2019 11:41 AMWe do this with our chickens and alpacas - there was one cleared field but we are replanting throughout- unfortunately a 10-year plan. But in the meantime we've moved the birds and alpacas into other areas of the farm where they can be under trees/enjoy the shade/drink from a pond, etc. It seems like a more natural life for them and is prettier and not so stark. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportReducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?
Alana Randol 4/23/2019 11:37 AMWe need a larger vehicle to tow a holiday trailer, and thus far none of the hybrids/electrics can do that. That is restricting our choice right now although we consider getting a fully electric car in two years after our research. The purchase we considered was the Toyota Highlander Hybrid - 30mpg - but it doesn't tow quite enough for our existing gear weight. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodIn your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?
Alana Randol 4/23/2019 11:36 AMwe've been working on this for a year now - meat free cooking has become a lot easier - although we still enjoy meat on a regular basis as well. I've made a point to try the various vegan/vegetarian options at local fast food like A&W and Burger King as well, just to support. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Alana Randol 4/23/2019 11:35 AMLess food waste, which is huge. We are being more aware of which items don't really "expire" like vinegar based dressings, etc. I also have a goal to buy less/store less so we're using things up before expiration, although "list only" grocery shopping is hard for me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Alana Randol 4/23/2019 11:33 AMWe looked into solar and the way the power infrastructure is set up in Alberta Canada it makes it very non-economical. There are non-changing transmission and maintenance fees that would result in your power bill not going down with increased self-sustainability. Very frustrating. And then an election happened and the solar rebates program will be discontinued as well. It's frustrating to want to push forward into a more renewable future when the politics around you actively work against it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and CitiesWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Alana Randol 4/23/2019 11:31 AMMany towns/cities still don't have sidewalks in all residential areas. That makes taking kids for a walk especially difficult. Littles on tricycles, wagons, etc. Initiatives to get all residential areas sidewalks should be high priority.
