Our family has been hobby farming for 10 years and we are ready to take it up a notch!  We have access to 100 acres of land which we want to do something meaningful, sustainable, and environmentally impactful with.  We are getting inspired by everything we are learning from this challenge.  We would love to involve other local families in our goal if anyone out there is interested in the planning, execution and reaping of this project!

Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

Palm oil is one of those hidden ingedients in many foods we eat.  If you start reading lables you will see that it shows up in almost all packaged foods.  Unless the palm oil is sustainably harvested, what we eat on a regular basis can be contributing to deforestation, peatland degradation, and of course the destruction of diverse ecosystems.  In Indonesia the Orangutang - our closest relatives, are hugely under threat for survival.
Our family is comitted to avoiding palm oil all together!

Was encouraged this morning while listening to the radio.  Canada is finally getting serious about one-time-use plastics used in packaging.  Europe has made huge steps in this direction and it's great to know that, in June, Canada is also taking steps.   Second bit of good news:  our east coast friends in PEI have banned plastic bags, while Nfld and Labradour are in the midst of making the same commitment!  Maybe something our Ontario government needs to hear about?!?!

We are very excited about this challenge!!  It's encouraging to see how many of the daily challenges are already a part of our everyday life, and how very much more we can be doing to bring about change!
