Support Local Food Systems

#4 Plant-Rich Diet

I will source 50 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.

    Food Support Local Food Systems
Dependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?

I really love the idea of knowing exactly where my food comes from, how far it traveled to get to me, and who was involved in the process. Our society today is so far removed from farming that those questions are nearly impossible to answer when it comes to food we buy in grocery stores. Local food systems are beneficial for innumerable reasons but I especially like the potential they provide to build personal relationships with the farmers who feed us.

I joined this challenge because it's more important than ever to be conscious of the impact my day-to-day behaviors have on the environment. I've been vegan for four years for environmental reasons but wanted to use the Eco-Challenge as an opportunity to do even more. For the month of April (and hopefully beyond), I'll be buying as much of my groceries as possible from farmer's markets in our area. Thankfully, New Paltz is flooded with farms and agriculture and, now that winter is over, buying locally should be easy. I'm excited to reduce my carbon footprint all while supporting the local economy and nourishing my body with fresh, whole foods!
