Support Local Food Systems

#4 Plant-Rich Diet

I will source 20 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.

This year, the hardest part of the challenge was making the effort to check in.  Once I checked in, it was easy to complete the challenges.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Support Local Food Systems
Dependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?

We have a 'zero packaging' breakfast at our household.  It consists of oatmeal, peanut butter and honey, all purchased in bulk from our local co-op.  It feels great to bring back and refill the same container over and over.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transport Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

Reduced fuel cost is a motivating factor.  Also the low interior noise and vibration levels during electric mode operation create a more luxurious interior environment than a comparable gas vehicle.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but may its carbon footprint is not obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

Fly ash is a great concept for low CO2 concrete.  However, the inherent radioactivity of fly ash must be considered during it's use.  There are many alternative binders in development.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

Our office has Styrofoam recycling!  http://styrorecycle.com/  There are bins down in the trash and bike room.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Buildings and Cities Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

"beg" buttons to activate crosswalks are inconvenient.  Traffic signals timed to prioritize cars.  What if the default setting for traffic lights was to have all car directions default to red, and all the pedestrian signals default to walk?  Then when a car approaches it has to stop an activate a sensor.

There are poorly placed posts that obscure pedestrians. Relocate post or add curb bulb to increase pedestrian visibility.

I also notice the smell of the trees and flowers blooming.
