Amy Shapiro 4/24/2019 7:37 PMI’ve had an inspiring three weeks. Thanks to all of you for agreeing to go along for the ride. -
Reflection QuestionTransport Test Drive an Electric BikeHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Private vehicles account for 60% of trips of a mile or less. Do you often drive short distances instead of biking or walking? If so, how might incorporating an electric bike into your lifestyle help you make more climate-friendly choices?
Amy Shapiro 4/24/2019 9:58 AMI live in a somewhat urban area and could easily use an electric bike to run errands around town.-
Amy Shapiro 4/24/2019 12:45 PMHi Cal! We went to Overlook Bicycles in Woodstock, NY. They actually came to our school and gave us a presentation. -
Cal Trumann 4/24/2019 11:40 AMHeya, I think we're in the same region, and I had a heck of a time finding someplace to test drive an e-bike! Where did you end up going?

Reflection QuestionWomen and Girls Host a Film ScreeningWhat is the next step beyond raising awareness of women's and gender equality issues?
Amy Shapiro 4/24/2019 7:28 AMThe next step is to get involved and DO SOMETHING! I gave a microloan to a woman in Guatemala through kiva.org as my first step. -
Reflection QuestionLand Use Learn about Local Indigenous PracticesWhat did you learn about indigenous peoples' land management that you can apply in your own life?
Amy Shapiro 4/23/2019 11:19 AMI was shocked to learn how many of our current highways and roads were actually pathways made by the Mastidons and Indigenous Peoples. I was also surprised to learn how much of this history I did not know. If we are going to exist in a fossil free environment in the future we need to learn to make choices about where to live based on how we can exist with the environment, rather than against it.

Amy Shapiro 4/19/2019 7:34 AMOne thing I've realized as we enter the last week of this challenge is that I did a lot of easy one-time challenges in the beginning. And that there's a limit of 15 one time challenges. So now I am finding myself completing more difficult challenges and deleting my earlier one-time challenges so that I can get credit for the bigger challenges. Strangely enough, I'm finding this quite satisfying. -
Reflection QuestionAction Track: Social Justice Give a MicroloanGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. Why do you think that is?
Amy Shapiro 4/19/2019 7:32 AMI think there are probably a variety of reasons for this. I think maybe one of the main reasons is that giving birth provides women with an experience that gives a perspective on humanity that few if no other experiences can provide. This inspires women to invest in their families and communities, and humanity, in very productive ways. -
Reflection QuestionTransport Purchase a Carbon OffsetA round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2. What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?
Amy Shapiro 4/17/2019 2:33 PMI only fly for vacation and do have family far away from me so I can only reach them by airplane. To reduce my flights I can fly only to visit family and I can choose to take vacations in places I can get to by car. I can also purchase carbon offsets when I do fly. -
Amy Shapiro 4/16/2019 5:26 PMI just read through my team members posts from the past few days and found myself really inspired. Final week of the challenge starts tomorrow! But this of course is about changing habits going forward, not just for this challenge.
