I’ve had an inspiring three weeks. Thanks to all of you for agreeing to go along for the ride.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transport Test Drive an Electric Bike
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Private vehicles account for 60% of trips of a mile or less. Do you often drive short distances instead of biking or walking? If so, how might incorporating an electric bike into your lifestyle help you make more climate-friendly choices?

I live in a somewhat urban area and could easily use an electric bike to run errands around town.

Hi Cal! We went to Overlook Bicycles in Woodstock, NY.  They actually came to our school and gave us a presentation.

Heya, I think we're in the same region, and I had a heck of a time finding someplace to test drive an e-bike! Where did you end up going?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Women and Girls Host a Film Screening
What is the next step beyond raising awareness of women's and gender equality issues?

The next step is to get involved and DO SOMETHING! I gave a microloan to a woman in Guatemala through kiva.org as my first step.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Use Learn about Local Indigenous Practices
What did you learn about indigenous peoples' land management that you can apply in your own life?

    Amy Shapiro's avatar
    Amy Shapiro 4/23/2019 11:19 AM
I was shocked to learn how many of our current highways and roads were actually pathways made by the Mastidons and Indigenous Peoples. I was also surprised to learn how much of this history I did not know. If we are going to exist in a fossil free environment in the future we need to learn to make choices about where to live based on how we can exist with the environment, rather than against it.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?

One thing I've realized as we enter the last week of this challenge is that I did a lot of easy one-time challenges in the beginning. And that there's a limit of 15 one time challenges. So now I am finding myself completing more difficult challenges and deleting my earlier one-time challenges so that I can get credit for the bigger challenges. Strangely enough, I'm finding this quite satisfying.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Social Justice Give a Microloan
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. Why do you think that is?

    Amy Shapiro's avatar
    Amy Shapiro 4/19/2019 7:32 AM
I think there are probably a variety of reasons for this. I think maybe one of the main reasons is that giving birth provides women with an experience that gives a perspective on humanity that few if no other experiences can provide. This inspires women to invest in their families and communities, and humanity, in very productive ways.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Purchase a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2. What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

    Amy Shapiro's avatar
    Amy Shapiro 4/17/2019 2:33 PM
I only fly for vacation and do have family far away from me so I can only reach them by airplane. To reduce my flights I can fly only to visit family and I can choose to take vacations in places I can get to by car. I can also purchase carbon offsets when I do fly.

I just read through my team members posts from the past few days and found myself really inspired. Final week of the challenge starts tomorrow! But this of course is about changing habits going forward, not just for this challenge.
