Reflection QuestionFood Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Meghan Sullivan 4/24/2019 4:05 PMI had never heard of silvopasture prior to the eco challenge, but I think it's a great way to help preserve the environment and lessen the harmful impact (like CO2 production) humans can have. -
Reflection QuestionLand Use Local Perennial BiomassClimate scientist Katharine Hayhoe states that "The reason we care about climate change is because it affects the people and places that we care about." What is happening (or will happen) in your area that will affect the people and places you care about?
Meghan Sullivan 4/23/2019 12:56 PMThe scary thing about climate change is that it affects everyone everywhere. People will be dealing with shrinking coastlines, fewer plants to produce oxygen, less biodiversity, and a shortage of farmland/food. -
Reflection QuestionLand Use Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Meghan Sullivan 4/23/2019 12:44 PMIt really is frightening to see the damage that has been done to the forests that give us the oxygen we need to breathe. However, with increased awareness and conservation efforts, I hope we all will be able to reduce/reverse the negative impact we've made. -
Reflection QuestionElectricity Generation Learn More about BiomassHad you ever heard of biomass techonology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share this with your friends!
Meghan Sullivan 4/23/2019 12:29 PMI head never heard of the possibility of generating electricity from biomass, and it seems like a very promising option. It's like recycling, but to the next level. -
Meghan Sullivan 4/23/2019 12:19 PMAs it begins getting darker later, try turning out all the lights in your house for one hour each night/delay turning them on until it's truly dark. I was really surprised how much electricity I was able to save by doing so :) -
Reflection QuestionElectricity Generation Learn More about Wave and Tidal EnergyWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? Were you surprised by the information you found?
Meghan Sullivan 4/23/2019 12:17 PMI was really happy to learn that there are some countries where wave/tidal energy is already being harnessed. While the impact on marine life must carefully be considered, this has the potential to be a strong energy source that does not require any land. -
Reflection QuestionElectricity Generation Explore Other Electricity Generation SolutionsWhat is the most exciting solution you explored? Why is it exciting to you?
Meghan Sullivan 4/23/2019 12:09 PMIt really is amazing how accessible wind and solar energy can be. While there a lot of great options for renewable energy, these seem to be the most "do-able" for the average person. -
Meghan Sullivan 4/19/2019 12:28 PMIf you're buying eggs to dye for Easter, consider buying free-range, grass-fed eggs to support humane brands :) -
Meghan Sullivan 4/17/2019 5:48 PMIf you're looking to start a garden but don't know where to start, many libraries offer gardening programs that can help you! :)
