Keep Track of Wasted Food

#3 Reduced Food Waste

I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the EcoChallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.

Oops. I didn't mean to submit that already.

Over the last 20 days, I have found myself trying to justify the amount of food I end up throwing out. I have realized that the majority of the food I waste is from leftovers. I am really bad about eating leftovers-- I always tell myself I will, and I tell my boyfriend not to eat them because I want them... And then I don't eat them and he doesn't eat them and they become wasted.
When I can, I try to give my dog food that will otherwise be thrown out-- however we don't like to give her wheat/gluten amongst other things, so this can pose to be very difficult.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I would use that money to help fund sustainable resources, and for organizations that give food to people who need it.

    Waste leftovers too much.
