Pete's actions
Buildings and Cities
Go for a Daily Walk
#54 Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Buildings and Cities
Choose LED Bulbs
#33 LED Lighting (Household)
I will replace 20 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Transport
Stay on the Ground
#43 Airplanes, #63 Telepresence
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Materials
Choose Recycled Paper
#70 Recycled Paper
I will plan ahead to only use paper products made from post-consumer recycled paper for my home or office.
Materials
Research Cement Alternatives
#36 Alternative Cement
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching cement alternatives that reduce the carbon footprint of concrete.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?
-
Pete Watkins 4/11/2019 4:28 AMThis challenge is helping me to be more cognizant of what I can do to reduce my carbon footprint and how I might contribute to helping my community reduce it's footprint as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsConcrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but may its carbon footprint is not obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?
Pete Watkins 4/09/2019 4:28 AMI imagine steel and aluminum production both have very large carbon footprints - from the mining of raw materials to their manufacture. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Pete Watkins 4/08/2019 6:55 AMif I can allow adequate time to drive and the distance is less than, say, 600 miles, i'd be more inclined to drive. More to see and for me, often less stressful than airports! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and CitiesWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Pete Watkins 4/08/2019 6:53 AMI've noticed in my community and surrounding communities, a need for greater awareness for motorists around pedestrian crosswalks for improved safety and accessibility for pedestrians. Motorists generally aren't interested or are confused about the right of way for pedestrians nor do they generally wish to yield to them most of the time.
