I learned that there are many types of wave and tidal energy, including tidal turbines, tidal barrages, tidal fences, surface devices, underwater devices, and reservoirs. These use the energy from waves or tides moving the water to spin turbines and generate energy. Tidal turbines generate more energy than wind turbines, and are better because they generate more consistent energy since the tide is constant. However, these devices are very expensive to install and maintain and using them can cause harm to fish and sea animals as well as make migration for sea creatures difficult. In addition to this, there are limited locations where these devices can be installed. Wave and tidal energy has its pros and cons, and as of now there are only two locations where it is used in the world (France and Canada). This is a possible renewable resource we should keep in mind as an alternative to other energy sources that contribute to climate change!
