  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Buildings and Cities Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

Walking in Seattle as a means to get from work to the bus is a necessity. Some of the hills are very steep and the sidewalks have no grip (smooth or become slick in the rain). Better shoes for this area is the most feasible solution because improving the sidewalks is costly venture. However, taking advantage of walking trails in and around the area (Green Lake, for example) offers and opportunity for walking, people-watching, and enjoying the beauty of the city.

I have an older home with wall heaters. Not sure about replacing/upgrading these for more efficient heating options.

In just 2 weeks, we've already saved 7,365 plastic containers from outliving us in landfills & oceans.
    Thanks for your part!

    I received this update today:

Of the 542 organizations participating thus far, VMMC is currently in 1st place for points earned (39,615) and most participants (457)!

I believe the easiest of the 88 challenges available on the site are the quick learning opportunities provided right through the Learn More buttons. Each of the challenge categories offers learning and point-scoring opportunities accomplished easily by clicking and reading. One example of this, under Food, is reading about sell by, use by, and best by dates.

Please consider checking in daily via the dashboard button on the
EcoChallenge site. That act alone will earn you, and us, points. So far VMMC is in first place nationally for number of participants and number of total points earned!

    Did you know that
    -          You can recruit anyone to your team, including VM business partners, contractors, staff from other departments, and family members
    -          Recruiting team members earns you 5 or 10 points for each one
    -          Adding, renaming and switching teams are all allowed until April 24th
    -          Some teams are really having fun with team titles, such as Spit Happens, Renal Recyclers, planet protectORs, Rehab This, slOBS, We got Rhythm, Dirty Shoes, Food Fighters, and We Don’t Just Bond, We Glucose
    -          The VM Anesthesiology team just surpassed the HR Climate Coolers for having the most members (42)

Tell me what you think of this staff engagement experiment of ours. Are you finding the EcoChallenge too challenging? Inspiring? What have you learned? What do you like or dislike? Please share your candid impressions with me. Or let me know how I can help you get more out of this.

Please send any feedback to John at John.Leigh@virginiamason.org

Can I tell you that riding the articulated bus is difficult for me? The seats recline too far and my knees hit the seat/partition in fron of me. When I choose to sit sideways, I get motion sick. No-win situation this morning. :-(
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Use Public Transit
How has your access to various kinds of transporation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

As a younger person I used public transportation because I did not have access to a private vehicle. Now I use public transportation because I don't want the hassles of driving in rush hour traffic. It takes just as long to get to and from work on the bus, but I arrive happier.

Brining leftovers for lunch is a good way to make sure I'm not wasting food and that I'm saving money as well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
