  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

It's discouraging to learn that many peatlands in Indonesia that are such important carbon sinks globally are being drained and replaced with palm oil and paper plantations. Living far away from SE Asia, the best way I can make a positive impact on this issue is to purchase products with sustainably sourced ingredients.

    Food Reduce Animal Products
In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

A relative abundance of wealth is perhaps contributing to Americans eating more meat than other countries in the world. Increasing the vegetable based meals in my household (and growing some of those veggies in the backyard) is dropping our weekly grocery expenses.

Electricity Generation Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

Watching the short video on the anaerobic digester at MSU brings to mind the concept of a circular economy. My vision of a sustainable community is one where we reduce our consumption of resources while also keeping those resources in use for as long as possible and then recover and regenerate products at the end of the service life of each resource.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Composting
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

I hate to see any of these resources wasted. I'm composting at home and serving family members less on their plates so less food is dumped after the meal.
Also, we just hosted a compost workshop at work (presentation by Asheville Greenworks) to encourage more Asheville residents to set up compost at their homes.

Eating veggies is not only good for people, it's good for the planet's climate.

Biking to dinner makes the experience much more fun.  Exercise, outdoors, and more interaction with others.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

I will strive to bring reusable bags to the grocery store and reduce use of Ziploc bags.
