REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More about BiomassHad you ever heard of biomass techonology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share this with your friends!
Aidan Walsh 4/24/2019 6:53 PMI had heard of biomass in the most traditional sense (that is a wood burning furnace to heat an individual house) but I had never heard of it as a means of producing sustainable, clean, efficient heating. I think it is wonderful that we have such a low tech- easily implemented and (most importantly) eco-friendly form of energy production to help us wean off of fossil fuels and hold us over until we develop a more flexible and efficient power grid to accommodate more long term sustainable energy solutions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Aidan Walsh 4/24/2019 6:38 PMPeatlands seem like an invaluable resource to the global ecosystem, and a resource that has largely yet to be drained by humans at that. I hope to see the 85% of remaining peatlands stay intact, and continue to absorb Co2 from the atmosphere. I plan on purchasing products made with either sustainable palm oil or no palm oil whatsoever in order to stop supporting the companies who are destroying these valuable peat lands for profit. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Aidan Walsh 4/23/2019 1:06 PMI would love to see micro turbines installed around my downtown area on taller buildings to power downtown. Smaller businesses could also use these turbines to power their in the future (assuming that innovations continue to progress the cost efficiency of these micro turbines). Any small steps that the city can take toward incorporation micro turbines into energy production for the city. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsIn your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?
Aidan Walsh 4/22/2019 12:51 PMI'm optimistic about this new diet. It will be good for the earth, animals, and my own health.
