While researching insulation products this morning, I came across this: "The dramatic use of plastic is only beginning to hit the public consciousness of United States citizens, where Americans go through 100 billion plastic shopping bags every year and discard 2.5 million plastic bottles each hour."

2.5 MILLION PLASTIC BOTTLES EACH HOUR DISCARDED in the US!!

That is appalling and I am guilty myself over the past few days. I had been doing really well making my own tea, drinking it out of my SS cup and transporting it in a glass bottle, but time got tight this week, I got slack and have bought several single serving bottles of tea. I am resolving to go back to making my own tea on a regular basis because stories of whales with plastic in their bellies dying of starvation is heartbreaking and to know that microscopic plastic particles are airborne and have been found in some of the most pristine areas of the world is truly troubling.

Definitely need to step up my game.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Eliminate Toxic Plastics
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I don't use straws and refuse plastic bags at the store. I know a lot of restaurants back home that are using stainless steel straws, but I have yet to see any here in the Metro Charlotte area. Reusable, washable straws for those that require a straw seems like a small thing but I believe taking steps to eliminating single-use plastics will go a long way in reducing our waste stream that apparently is flowing directly into our oceans.

Went to an Earth Day event today with some colleagues. A beautiful day to escape the office for a bit, it was heartening to see so many local service organizations and environmental groups and hear about how they are impacting the community.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Go Paperless
What do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?

I want more experiences rather than more stuff. To go on adventures with family and friends. More hiking, walks with dogs, paddling rivers, camping in the woods, swimming in the lake with the grandkids. To live the experiences rather than accumulating more and more stuff that's how I like to roll. :)

Buildings and Cities Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

Noticing all the pollen on the asphalt. Appreciating the flowering shrubs and trees. Fortunately, we have some green spaces nearby so the whole walk isn't along a busy road.
