REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Support Women-Owned BusinessesGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women? Can you share any past experiences that may help others take action?
Deanna Boettcher 4/06/2019 3:22 PMAs a woman and business owner, I naturally look to support women owned businesses. I enjoy interacting with small business owners- they are usually more accessible then at a large store or chain, and because of this , they can be more tuned in to their customers. It also makes the experience that much more enjoyable when you are making connections with people in your local community. It becomes more personable and you get to learn more about the passion behind the products, where they come from, and how you are helping to support your community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Deanna Boettcher 4/05/2019 12:32 PMI am definitely more aware of my surroundings and see a lot more of the neighborhoods when I am biking (in today's case). Sometimes the experience is scarey because people drive crazy here in LA - but when I am in my groove, I am invigorated to be out there feeling the breeze and using my body to take me places. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Online Energy AuditWhat are your next steps for saving energy?
Deanna Boettcher 4/04/2019 4:08 PMWe have begun changing all of our bulbs over to LED as they have gone out. We cannot change our heating system, since we rent - but we can improve on how often we use the fireplace & additional space heaters in the cooler months. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsIn your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?
Deanna Boettcher 4/04/2019 1:33 PMI think the meat eating diet has always been a part of our culture, and the capitalism of America has kept it that way with marketing of foods, and especially the emphasis on fast food from the 50's through the 90's. In addition the FDA and the nutritional guidelines have been outdated for so long with "proper" nutritional guidelines. I do think we have come a long way and are seeing improvements thanks to new data and nutritional information on plant based diets. In addition people have become more aware of the inhumane practices of the meat industry and the overall damage to our environment. We still have a way to go. -
Deanna Boettcher 4/04/2019 9:49 AMI realize by just joining this challenge, I am already thinking ahead about my weekly activities (or plans) and strategizing how to lessen my impacts. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Deanna Boettcher 4/04/2019 9:47 AMEven when it's a cloudy day, a morning walk is nice. The rose bushes are starting to fill in and early blooms are showing up.-
Deanna Boettcher 4/04/2019 9:53 AM...and there are too many cars on the road even in the early morning hours. I'd like to see less cars & more people using mass transit.
