In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

I don't think North Americans think that much about the environmental impact of eating meat.  Until I saw the documentary Cowspiracy I was not that aware of the effects on global warming because of the vast quantity of cows needed to feed a population that eats meat more than once a day.  I am not a vegetarian but I have limited my red meat consumption for health and environmental reasons.
