I learnt about the direct link between (lack of) transportation and poverty, particularly from the Philadelphia story about the effectiveness of carpooling schemes in giving people access to suburban jobs that are better paid than inner city ones, and thus increasing their opportunities.

I joined the challenge because a friend in my environmental ethics discussion group emailed a reminder to me about it, and I realised that I need to back up words with actions! The actions I have chosen so far extend my understanding in areas I have not researched before in depth, and can be a useful talking point to help raise awareness in others.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

I often go for the cheapest product so my coffee and chocolate purchases in particular tend to support unsustainable land use for producing these commodities. I will copy out the list of brands showing negative and positive (or less negative?) environmental impacts, so that I can be a more discerning shopper.

How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

Somewhat difficult knowing that I will need to read the labels of certain products I buy to ensure I am not contributing to the destruction of tropical rainforests.

    Food Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

No, I hadn't heard the term before, and I have learned that it improves the health of both animals and the land by integrating forage, trees and grazing animals in a managed way. It seems to me to be a much more holistic approach to land management than the dominant Western model of monoculture and industrial agriculture.
