REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Erica Dellwo 4/03/2019 5:38 PMExpletive! ALL my favorite hygiene products contain Palm Oil and its derivatives! Soap, shampoo/conditioner, lotions, and toothpaste. Groan. Honestly, I think it will be easier to become a full vegetarian than it will be to give up my unscented sensitive skin SPF 15 facial lotion that I've been using since I was 18. Sniff.-
Erica Dellwo 4/03/2019 6:09 PMThanks, Pauline, you're the best. Yeah, I did not realize how prevalent it is. -
Pauline Druffel 4/03/2019 6:05 PMThat sounds hard. I went grocery shopping today and was about to get some crackers, but when I looked at the ingredients, I saw that they contained palm oil, so I put them back. It's in lots of stuff. I never thought that it might also be in cosmetics. I'll look now to see if its in mine.

Erica Dellwo 4/03/2019 4:54 PMMmm, we are still eating frozen fruit that we picked last summer. Life is good. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsIn your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?
Erica Dellwo 4/03/2019 4:52 PMIMHO, I think any country with a strong ranching tradition is more likely to have meat-focused diets. Furthermore, I believe it has been observed that the wealthier a country becomes, the more meat its citizens eat. As a child whose parents grew up during the Great Depression and in World War II Europe, serving meat for dinner each night was very important, and a lack of it was seen as "hard times." That is just my little story. I have no idea what this says about American values and ways of living.-
Erica Dellwo 4/03/2019 10:49 PMYou are so right, Pauline. I think we've learned a lot since the days when we were growing up. As Michael Pollan says, "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants." I hope attitudes are changing; mine certainly has. -
Pauline Druffel 4/03/2019 6:11 PMI grew up on a farm. I was born just before World War II started. In all of my lifetime I never had any sense of not having enough food, and I remember my parents often saying how fortunate we were to be able to grow our own food. We also had meat at every meal unless it was Friday when we had fish. I've also heard that as people gain in wealth, one of the ways they like to show it is to eat more meat. But the downside is that many of my relatives died of heart attacks or cancer.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Erica Dellwo 4/03/2019 4:28 PMThe smell of Spring is in the air! It looks like the City cleaned the sidewalk on High Drive at the same time they swept the street. All the winter dog poo landmines are gone.
Changes? I would like a bit of grass or bushes separating the sidewalks from the street. Sidewalks and bike lanes should be required on all busy roads for safety's sake. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Support Local Food SystemsDependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?
Erica Dellwo 4/02/2019 10:28 PMI'm motivated to buy local food by the environmental advantages of not transporting it from so far away, and supporting the local economy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Solar Water ConsultationDiversifying our energy supply and improving public health are just two benefits of renewable energy. What other motivators inspire you to consider installing a solar water heater in your home?
Erica Dellwo 4/02/2019 10:22 PMWe get electricity from community solar, but use gas to heat our water. A solar water heater could really reduce our carbon footprint!
