    The expiry dates are put forth by the manufacturer and have nothing to do with the safety of the food.

    Often we  (consumers) find the dates on food packages confounding. We really don't understand the differences between the dates "use-by", "best by" and "sell by", do they really signify something? These dates don't guarantee the food safety of the products, there may be a possibility of food packages being at its best quality even after the expiry dates pass. Just as we buy fresh fruits and vegetables by visual and sensory inspection, we can do that for processed foods as well.
