Women and Girls Make School More Affordable
Why is it important that girls have equal access to education in order to reduce our global greenhouse gas emissions?

This solution ranks #6 in Drawdown's research about what can help to  turn around global warming.  More education means that girls marry later, are more likely to marry of their own choice and at later ages than otherwise, therefore will have fewer children (less population growth).  Having more education also means better economic opportunities which leads to greater upward mobility and growth of their community's economy.  Anyone who wants to sponsor a Kenyan orphan can  contact: sos@shareafrica.org.  Being a sponsor costs $600 per year.  There are also opportunities to contribute to girls' education in Tanzania for smaller contributions  through another organization with a similar name, “Share in Africa” shareinafrica.org.

I sponsor two girls in Kenya right now.

I joined this challenge primarily because I want to do everything possible to turn around global warming.  I also joined because others in my recent Drawdown class were part of it and were asking me to join.  I chose the eating vegan challenge because I already eat that way and want to encourage others to do so also.  The stepson with whom I share dinners has been cooperative about cooking and eating only vegan dinners, but , so far, he eats meat products at other times during the day.  The rest of my family is also very resistant to the idea of cutting animal products out of their diets.  When we eat out and I am paying, I will not pay for beef or lamb, and so far they've accepted that.  But their eating habits at other times haven't changed.   Every now and them I tell them that cutting out meat even one day a week does more for the environment than buying a Prius.

As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

The part that feels most overwhelming is the awareness of how much influence our corporations have on our government, i.e., on the many decisions that are being made and how many of their decisions pay attention only to how much money they're making, rather than on the effect of their policies and procedures on people and on the planet.

What helps me stay hopeful is hearing about the many, many things. that other people are doing.for the Earth.

    Transport Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

I certainly enjoy the natural world more when I walk instead of drive.  I also stay more centered and mindful.

In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

    Marjory Donn's avatar
    Marjory Donn 4/14/2019 4:35 PM
Many people in North America make money off of our  meat consumption.  Those people do advertising that tells people they need meat.
