Brandon Fiege 4/19/2019 5:39 AMToday I decided to research heating oils and their effect on the environment. I always thought that natural gas was the best option for an environmentally friendly source of energy (it's natural, after all right?) But in my research I learned that BioHeat actually emits less carbon into the atmosphere. Bio Heat, a blend of biodiesel and ultra- low sulfur heating oil, is a newly developed heating oil source that is actually an efficient source to heat our homes with. Read more about it here:

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Research Heat PumpsWhy is taking action on climate change important to you? Why do you care?
Brandon Fiege 4/19/2019 5:33 AMTaking action on climate change is important to me because while I might not see the immediate effects in my lifetime, my children and their children will certainly be effected by the decisions we are making now. It's easy to think "out of sight, out of mind" when it comes to these issues, but if everyone continues to think like that we'll continue this path of destruction. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Zero-waste CookingHow are environmental issues like black carbon and other emissions from cooking fires or rudimentary cookstoves also human health and social justice issues? Why do these issues matter to you?
Brandon Fiege 4/19/2019 5:30 AMNot only is black carbon and soot produced by cookstoves detrimental to the environment, but are also harmful carcinogens for humans as well. In countries such as Africa and India, soot deposits and black smoke are very big problems in these communities, leading to serious health problems in these communities. Unlike CO2 emissions, eliminating black carbon emissions gives immediate results. Newly developed technologies relying on solar powered $20 stoves will cut out 90% of black carbon emissions if implemented in these poverty striken communities.
