REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Buy BambooAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
Nicole Hambleton 4/23/2019 3:33 PMSometimes I can find bamboo sheets in our community. Otherwise I purchase organic cotton sheets from Home Sense. I don't know of a business in our community selling sustainable alternatives except TP and tissues made out of bamboo at Harmony in Orangeville. Anywhere else? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Nicole Hambleton 4/23/2019 3:30 PMI found a great resource put out by Food Rescue (foodrescue.ca) . A poster that explains all about food consumption timelines. My family learned that yogurt and cheese can be eaten up to 2 weeks past BB (best before date). This will save us from a lot of food waste. Glad to learn this and save some money and the planet! Check out this cute and important video about food waste https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WREXBUZBrS8&feature=youtu.be -
Nicole Hambleton 4/23/2019 3:11 PMWhat??!! The challenge is almost done??!1 There are many things I am going to remain doing. Including trying to reduce our families' paper use. Thinking of purchasing a bidget!! I heard a podcast about Hello Tushie and now I'm intrigued. -
Nicole Hambleton 4/23/2019 3:07 PMWow! I can't believe this challenge is almost over...I'm just getting started! I'm not sure how I can register this or get points but I am part of a no-waste potluck tomorrow where I will be speaking about food choices and the environment. Super pumped!!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Communicate With My Elected OfficialsWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Nicole Hambleton 4/17/2019 12:59 PMTo be clear. I contacted elected officials about (1) Aggregate and land use and (2) the need to continue the Bloor Street bike lane in Toronto. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Try CarpoolingList some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Nicole Hambleton 4/15/2019 8:42 AMI do frequent the Orangeville area, which is my closest "big" urban area. Since signing up for this challenge action I have had a hard time finding people to carpool with. Part of this is my fault as I haven't been overly active in reaching out to the community. Part of me is feeling awkward about driving people I don't know around. I will see if I can find a solution for this.
Great excitement! I do have a carpool booked tonight with someone I know, and I'm SUPER excited!!!!!

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Social Justice Learn about Local Indigenous PracticesWhat did you learn about indigenous peoples' land management that you can apply in your own life?
Nicole Hambleton 4/13/2019 7:47 AMI learned about respect. How we should be asking permission before taking anything from Mother Earth (i.e) asking to pick wild leeks or a flower. It is also important to give thanks after taking something. I have been more conscious when eating to give thanks to Mother Earth for the food and to all the hands that went into getting the food on my plate. So grateful for the bounty.-
Nicole Hambleton 4/15/2019 8:04 AMHi Anna! My knowledge about this comes from a book called "Braiding Sweetgrass" by Robin Wall Kimmerer. AMAZING book. Would highly recommend it. I have also studied mindful eating and took a workshop in Toronto a few weeks ago about Indigenous healthy issues and this came up. I am not native but could come and speak:)) -
Anna Gonzalez 4/14/2019 5:45 AMOh great things to think about! Where did you learn and get this info? I wanted our family to do this but didn’t know where to find a workshop. Was thinking on contacting local groups but it’s hard to communicate to everyone in our team here to see who was interested in joining us if someone came to talk to us.
