This has been great fun, as always!  Thanks everyone on our team who participated and learned so much about the positve ways we can contribute to a sustainable future.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Social Justice Make School More Affordable
Why is it important that girls have equal access to education in order to reduce our global greenhouse gas emissions?

    June Hament's avatar
    June Hament 4/23/2019 8:27 PM
Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest-ever Nobel Prize laureate (at age 17 ,has a clear message: girls from all over the world hold the key to today’s most pressing global challenges and climate change is chief among them.
The interaction of climate change and educating girls is complex, from limiting population growth to learning survival skills for themselves and their families, to expanding their options and abilities to make wise choices in the face of changing environmental and social conditions, and more  (see https://www.globalcitizen.org/en/content/malala-girls-education-healthier-planet/ for a discussion of some of these many issues)
According to the Malala Fund, which I have been supporting since last year's eco-challenge,, more than 130 million girls are not able to access a minimum education. When girls go to school, our world is safer, healthier and wealthier. A recent World Bank report, launched in partnership with Malala Fund, shows that if all girls completed secondary school, women and girls could add up to $30 trillion to the global economy.  Of course, increased prosperity without wise choices could possibly lead to worsening global warming, so we all must continue to educate ourselves as well!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Stay on the Ground
What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

    June Hament's avatar
    June Hament 4/19/2019 9:48 PM
Had two separate Zoom teleconferences today with participants from as far away as England and Mexico.  Zoom is such a pleasure to use, intimate and intentional -- sometimes I think Zoom meetings are better than face-to-face! Teleconferencing has come a long way from the 80's when we first experimented with it in the corporate world.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

    June Hament's avatar
    June Hament 4/19/2019 9:40 PM
Possibly our past history and geography of wide-open spaces which promoted easy, inexpensive cattle production close to urban areas, combined with our American wild-west mentality and relative affluence - Americans got in the habit of eating meat on a regular basis and we haven't yet adjusted our attitudes to reflect the new reality, especially of limited land resources.

We car-pooled to a Drawdown Workshop yesterday, over an hour from home.  It was lovely to spend extended, uninterrupted time with good friends having deep conversations about matters we care about.  We didn't even mind wrong turns (Thank you GPS!)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Try Carpooling
List some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

    June Hament's avatar
    June Hament 4/18/2019 10:53 PM
i saw a very thought-provoking bumper sticker (obviously, i was close enough to see the bumper of the car in front of me.) "You're not IN traffic - you ARE traffic!"
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Use Public Transit
How has your access to various kinds of transporation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

    June Hament's avatar
    June Hament 4/15/2019 9:55 PM
For much of my life i lived in rural or suburban areas, and for a number of years in California - in none of those areas was there anything like easily accessible public transport. I have become accustomed to the convenience of driving my own car but I recognize the necessity of looking at transport differently.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Social Justice Support Indigenous Peoples' Land Management
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

    June Hament's avatar
    June Hament 4/09/2019 8:48 PM
everything in creation is inter-connected - or, as Tich Nacht Hahn says, we all "inter-be." We, and all things, are made of the same essential bits, so what affects any part affects all.  When any part is out of balance, balance is disrupted everywhere.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

    June Hament's avatar
    June Hament 4/05/2019 7:37 PM
$1,500 spent on food an average family throws away each year would cover a lot of donations to local food banks.  There is no excuse for people to go hungry in this country with such an abundance available!

Welcome, Everyone! It's good to see so many of you have joined in so far this year - and the Challenge hasn't even started yet!  We're all very busy with our lives but we think you'll find it rewarding to take a couple of minutes each day to check in.  There is a pretty good Help page which might be useful to review, and you can always reach out to Marty or me if you have questions about how to navigate the website.  see you all in the Eco-Challenge!
