I spent a few minutes picking up trash and emptying the overflowing trash can at the bus stop outside my office. Then I put some bunches of fresh flowers and fresh herbs out for anyone who wanted them. We'll have a ton of ripe tomatoes in a couple weeks... Will set those or too. I'll commit to emptying the trash can there every couple of days. Literally takes a few minutes, and will keep so much trash off the street and out of storm drains.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

It would take hours, maybe days to really answer this question. In short, I think it's a few things and they're all connected:

Culture - our culture includes the idea that prosperity is, in part, expressed through diet. Meat has been adopted as part of the way we express our 'middle classness" or our success.

Habit - that culture has become habit. We've been taught the "meat and veggies" food pyramid. We grew up with it in every school cafeteria and public restaurant. There have been millions spent in ad campaigns. Where's the beef? It's ingrained in how we think about meals.

Industrial agriculture - it's easier and cheaper to buy a hamburger than to get a plate of fresh veggies. You get more calories for your dollar. The cost of meat is subsidized. It's more convenient. Our mainstream grocery stores are set up to promote the purchase of meat.

We need a return to local agriculture, education about better diet, involvement in our food systems.
