REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Support Local Food SystemsDependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?
Ember Penney 4/23/2019 7:34 PMIt is very important to me that I support local farmers. Without them, most people would have to get their food shipped from various places, resulting in increased carbon emissions. In addition, locally-sourced food is typically more fresh and healthy! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smaller PortionsFun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?
Ember Penney 4/23/2019 7:32 PMEating smaller portions not only benefits the environment, but can also improve your health! This can prevent overeating. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Ember Penney 4/23/2019 6:42 PMKnowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates motivates me to save as much food as I can. I wish I had known sooner that most food that gets thrown away is actually still good to eat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Ember Penney 4/23/2019 6:40 PMI had not heard of the term silvopasture before now. I think the biggest advantage of silvopasture is the effective use of land, providing both forests and grazing land. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood CompostingProducing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?
Ember Penney 4/23/2019 6:39 PMAll of this waste make me angry, especially the hours of labor put into producing the food. Thinking about the hard work people put into growing my food motivates me to be wise about expiration dates and always compost! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Recycle Everything I CanHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?
Ember Penney 4/23/2019 6:37 PMIn addition to recycling, I can refuse plastic straws at restaurants. I can also reuse my water bottle, coffee mug, and buy a reusable metal straw. Additionally, I can repurpose glass jars into pots and reuse my school supplies from previous years.
