  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but may its carbon footprint is not obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

Steel I imagine might have a large footprint compared to wood. With plant based materials and bamboo having the smaller footprint.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transport Research and Advocate for High-Speed Rail
What are the factors that influence your choice of transportation? These can include things like money, time, and convenience, as well as perceptions of danger or safety. What would need to change for you to regularly choose more climate-friendly options?

Convenience and time. Taking a train is more enjoyable because I can make the travel time more functional.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

I've been guilty of throwing food out past the "recommended" date. Good to know the different "expiration" date meanings.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
What did you learn about wave and tidal energy? Were you surprised by the information you found?

Interesting that it is a more consistent source of energy. However, it needs to be coordinate to minimize impact to fish.

A lot of room for improvement...in 2016, American Express ranked Portland at the bottom of the list for women owned businesses at #91 (with 100 being the worst). in 2017 American Express ranked State of Oregon at #40, in the bottom 10 in the country for women owned businesses.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Materials Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

    Dan Petrescu's avatar
    Dan Petrescu 4/08/2019 10:12 AM
Fertilizers with harmful chemicals - small impact for one property but multiplied by a large number it becomes a large negative impact.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Improve a Bus Stop
How can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?

    Dan Petrescu's avatar
    Dan Petrescu 4/08/2019 10:10 AM
Posting a schedule is a great way - a lot of bus stops don't have schedules which makes it very inconvenient.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Women and Girls Support Women-Owned Businesses
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women? Can you share any past experiences that may help others take action?

    Dan Petrescu's avatar
    Dan Petrescu 4/08/2019 10:10 AM
As simple as knowing about women-owned businesses in the neighborhood. Consciously supporting these businesses will gradually lead to change and equity.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Fix Leaky Faucets
What are other easy and low-cost ways to reduce your water usage at home?

On older homes with very high flow rate fixtures, valves can be closed slightly to allow less water volume to fixtures.
