Keep Track of Wasted Food

#3 Reduced Food Waste

I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the EcoChallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.

I also want to send a shout out to Hungry Harvest (local UMD graduate is founder) who rescues non-perfect produce and drops a lovely box of the same on my doorstep every other Sunday!  Thanks to them I'm eating healthier, discovering new meals and helping the planet by reducing food waste and at the same time, providing healthy FREE produce in underserved areas.  Check them out at: https://www.hungryharvest.net/

I'm encouraged by individual states' actions to combat climate change even if the feds are lagging in action (or worse, working against it).
I am also minimizing (to the best of my ability) any one-use plastic items in my everday life.  The statistics for the amount of plastic polluting our oceans is truly staggering and disheartening.

Only thing tossed yesterday were sad little chicken bones.

I roasted up some potatoes and onions last night.  They were getting soft and I'd either need to eat them or write about throwing them out so I opted to cook them (but here I am writing about them anyway).  So guess who's stinking up the microwave with potatoes and onions today at lunchtime? :)

I threw away another lamb chop bone last night.  Look for two more tonight.  Can anyone say leftovers?

Last night I threw out lamb chop bones.  They were done.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I'd rather use this money during retirement.
    On restaurant food.
Of which I almost always finish.
Or take home in a box.
But hopefully not a styrofoam box.

Today I plan to throw away one apple core; I already threw away one banana peel. I will report back if more is tossed.

Bah!  I believe this means I am winning since I threw away the least. :)

I tossed some vegetable peelings/stems/bad spots in the trash yesterday and over the weekend but I guarantee the majority of food will end up in my belly.

I bought a bamboo pizza peel just this week!  Not only is it a renewable resource, non-toxic and anti-microbial - it was also designed by a family (woman co-founder!) and is made right here in America.  It's beautiful and has many uses in addition to pizza (cutting board, bread and cheese board, and of course pizza)!
